The quote isn’t the end of the sale

Contractors lose jobs they could have won — not because of price, skill or timing, but because they stopped too early.

You meet a potential customer.
You discuss the job.
You prepare the quote.
You send it.

And then… silence.

So you assume they went with someone else.

But did they?

Customers don’t disappear for one reason. They might be comparing three quotes. They might be waiting for payday. They might be discussing it with their partner. They might have been busy when your message arrived and simply forgotten to reply.

Or maybe they’re waiting to see who follows up.

Sending the quote is only half the job

I’ve been getting quotes from various contractors recently, and one thing surprised me: almost nobody follows up.

They visit.
They seem interested.
They prepare the quote.
They send it.

And then nothing.

That’s a lot of effort to put into winning a job only to stop at the final step.

A follow-up doesn’t need to be complicated or pushy. Something as simple as:

“Hi, just checking you received the quote and whether you had any questions.”

That’s it.

You’re not hassling anyone - you’re reminding them you’re there and giving them an easy way to restart the conversation.

You don’t always have to be the cheapest

When customers compare quotes, price matters. But so does everything else.

Who turned up on time?
Who communicated clearly?
Who seemed reliable?
Who actually followed up?

If two businesses look equally capable, but one disappears after sending the quote while the other checks in a few days later, that small difference could win the job.

Following up also gives you useful information. Maybe the quote was too high. Maybe the timing didn’t work. Maybe they chose someone else.

Knowing is better than assuming.

More leads aren’t always the answer

Businesses spend a lot of time thinking about how to get more enquiries.

More ads.
More social media.
More referrals.
More leads.

But before spending money finding new customers, it’s worth asking a simpler question:

What happened to the people who already contacted you?

There could be perfectly good jobs sitting in old WhatsApp conversations, text messages, emails or notebooks - not because the customer wasn’t interested, but because nobody remembered to follow up.

Maybe you don’t need more leads. You just need fewer forgotten ones.

This is why I built HeyMyBiz

Follow-ups shouldn’t depend on memory, luck or scrolling through old messages.

HeyMyBiz is a simple way to keep track of potential jobs and remind yourself when it’s time to follow up - without turning your business into a complicated CRM or adding more admin to your day.

Because sometimes winning more work isn’t about finding more leads.

It’s about doing a better job with the ones you already have.
